Description
Leica Q3 Monochrom deliver pure, high-quality black-and-white photos. Without a color filter array, it captures sharper details, richer tones, and greater dynamic range, allowing photographers to focus fully on light, shadow, and composition with the distinct Leica look.
Dedicated BSI CMOS sensor with Triple Resolution Technology (60 / 36 / 18 MP), without color and low-pass filter, offering higher light sensitivity and an ISO range up to 200 000.
A monochrome sensor is built without a color filter array (CFA), which is typically placed on top of a standard sensor to capture color information. By omitting the CFA, each pixel on the monochrome sensor directly records the intensity of light without interpolation, resulting in:
Higher sharpness and detail: No demosaicing is required, preserving the native resolution of the sensor.
Improved light sensitivity: Without the CFA, more light reaches each pixel, enhancing low-light performance.
Greater dynamic range: The sensor can capture subtle tonal differences across highlights and shadows.
Additionally, the absence of the CFA eliminates the need for color correction.
The Monochrom sensor is uncompromisingly designed for pure image quality and maximum detail rendition. To achieve this, it forgoes the dedicated phase detection autofocus (PDAF) pixels found in color sensors that enable faster focusing. Instead, the Q3 Monochrom camera relies on contrast-based autofocus. Sharpness is determined precisely by seeking the point of highest contrast within the frame. This ensures exact focusing, especially when capturing fine structures and in black-and-white photography, where every detail matters.
In short :
Monochrom BSI CMOS-Sensor with Triple Resolution Technology
Extended ISO range 100 to 200.000
Dedicated Monochrom Design: Black paint finish on housing and lens hood, subtle black and gray engravings, “Monochrom” engraving on the top cover, and elegant leatherette
